Girls spill from the sea five or six, skin bronzed by sun bodies of all designs petite, tall, plump, a slender one but their wild, shrieking songs meld into one, a joyful choir. Like mermaids, slick with salt their sea spun hair swimwear bright and bold like a flock of fledgling birds they dart along the golden shore tackling the tallest to the sand, laughing, But in the next short breath the smallest extends a hand lifts her back up holds a warm embrace then they run again, back down into the crashing waves sparkling with only love. Iridescent, dancing in the foam, girlhood, a sea-song, calling home.
Here in Portugal, I found the inspiration for ‘sisters of the sea’. As a woman in my 20s still navigating beach anxieties, particularly about my body, witnessing the pure joy radiating from a group of young girls was a powerful experience. They were tanning, playing, and chatting without a hint of self-consciousness, completely absorbed in each other's company.
It was striking to me – no phones, no distractions, just their effortless harmony. This poem is a reflection on that unburdened beauty of girlhood and a tribute to those pure, timeless moments by the ocean.
